2013 Farm Fresh Share Program
The best way to get the freshest, most delicious, and most local food is to subscribe to the The Urban Farmer 2013 Farm Share program.
Each week, we gather for you the best local seasonal, fruits and vegetables into a convenient “share” that provides your family with a week’s worth of great taste and nutrition. Plus, we include convenient and tasty recipes, so if there is something new to you in the share, you can quickly prepare it like a pro.
Our Farm Share Program is based on the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model. In basic principle, it means the community supports the farmer. For direct access to the farmer and direct access to fresh local food, the community can sign up as members.
Members purchase a “share” with the benefit of receiving a portion of the harvest each week during the season, usually harvested only hours before pickup. The advantage to the farmers is they know exactly how much to plant and can finance their operations efficiently.
In order to provide variety and quality for our Farm Share members, our shares generally have a selection of fruits and vegetables from several farms. During the prime South Florida growing seasons (fall and spring) we source primarily from partner farms in the Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade County areas. In the off-season (summer) we reach a bit farther because the sub-tropical heat makes growing very challenging for local farmers.
Summer Shares 2013 – Special Note
The South Florida summer heat is relentless as are our nearly daily rain storms. The heat stresses our residents and our edible plants as well, especially those which are not tropical in nature (most of them). The result, as our local urban farmers know, is that few crops will produce viable vegetables or fruit during the hottest months of July, August, and September. Most of our partner farms take this time to close and prepare for the next season.
This summer, we have worked hard to grow several types of beans, herbs, lettuce, soy beans, cherry tomatoes, and herbs as long as they will produce from our Powerline farm. However, in order to provide a healthy and abundant share each week, we will increasingly have to source good food from organic farms many states north. Most of our members have indicated they prefer to support our mission through the summer and support smaller organic farms in the SE US region. We’ve had delicious doughnut peaches, fat organic tomatoes, and robust kale among other “local as possible” items.
Fortunately, summer heat will yield to slightly cooler days and nights in just a few weeks and our local farms will again be verdant and productive and our share boxes will be from much closer to your home – which is our mission and promise.
Our partner farms are all farmers we know and trust to use safe and sustainable natural growing practices. And sourcing from several local farms allows new members to start enjoying local food at any time during the year.
Ordering your share is easy and you can begin receiving your share on the next Friday pickup date if you order before Tuesday of the same week. Get started using this link to choose your pickup location through our convenient Farmigo service. You can manage your subscription through Farmigo, even pausing the service if you plan to be away.
Know Your Farmer
When you receive your fresh weekly harvest share, you will receive a farm list that identifies what items are in the box and the names the farms from which the items were harvested. We are committed to helping you know the local farmers. You will get to know truly great farmers like Ken and his family from the 100 year-old Erickson Farm in Canal Point and Nancy from the innovative Green Cay Farm in Boynton Beach.
Share Sizes and What You Can Expect
Shares come in two sizes – full share and 1/2 share. Normally, you receive your share weekly at your chosen pick-up point at a specified time frame on Fridays. Some people choose to receive their 1/2 share every other week rather than weekly. Full shares are perfect for medium-sized families and committed fruit and vegetable lovers. 1/2 shares are most popular.
Each week (or every other week if you choose) you will receive between 8 and 15 items made up of a variety of seasonal fruits, vegetables, and herbs. We do our best to offer common items you love, but we also mix in interesting varieties that you may not have experienced from mass grocery stores.
Each week’s share comes with great recipes for the included items (printed and via email). The weekly email also lists the farm source and other available items and events from The Urban Farmer Florida.
Farm Shares from The Urban Farmer Florida are priced at $32 per 1/2 share and $58 per full share. You may take delivery every week or every other week (known as “bi-weekly”). There is a 4-delivery commitment (so we can make commitments to the farmers). Shares are billed at a minimum of only four shares each billing ($128 for 1/2 shares or $232 for full shares). Most remote pickup sites have an additional $5.00 fee per pickup.
You manage your account online using the simple Farmigo system (accessed through our website). You may use Farmigo to pause your deliveries if you know you won’t be available for an upcoming pickup – just be sure to place the hold before 5:00 p.m. on the Monday preceding the delivery date so we don’t harvest food for you that week. You may also switch between weekly and bi-weekly if you find your needs change. You account will be automatically billed for a minimum of four additional deliveries the day after you pick up your last paid share.
There is a growing list of pickup up points and times available including our Local Food Patio Market location at 1101 NE 40th Court, Oakland Park, FL – off Dixie Highway north of Jaco Pastorius Park.
